Hi pauliewood,
I can hear Cass in the tracks you mentioned, including "No Dough". You can hear her sing "no dough" as Denny and Michelle sing the chorus. Hope this helps.
Take care,
Nicole

true, Nicole..I was listening to "Honeymoon" from the John Phillips "Jack of Diamonds", and it was hard for me to ascertain. Michelle did have the ability to produce a strong voice. I couldn't tell from that recording if Cass was actually singing, or an overdubbed Michelle.

Hi pauliewood,
On Jack of Diamonds' "Honeymoon", I just hear Michelle and Denny. But as I said in my earlier reply, On People Like Us's "No Dough", you can clearly hear Cass. I hope this doesn't confuse you. Cass might not be on the "Honeymoon" track because as you proboably already know, they weren't together in the studio at the same time to record the the album. According to John Phillips in his memoir "Papa John" everyone recorded their parts seperately and they were mixed together for the final album. if this is redundant, please ignore it. In closing, I agree with you that Michelle has a really strong voice on People Like Us. I'm really glad it's being re-issued. Have a great day. :D
Take care,
Nicole

Thanks, Nicole. I am looking forward to the re-release. You are correct. I am actually looking forward to another john phillips rendition of "April Anne". Other than that, I do not think this release will prove anything spectacular.

It is hard to discern Cass' vocals on People Like Us. I think part of that has to do with her presence, part of it (by his own admission and also borne out by Cass' own remarks to someone at the time) has to do with John's management of the sessions and his final mixing of the album. But she was there, at least physically. It's also important to remember that when they were laying down the tracks fo PLU she was literally weeks, and then days away from starting her first RCA LP recording sessions. I think it's also fair to say she was more interested in putting forth the effort there.

This kind of phenomenon is not limited to the PLU album. Several years ago we talked about the group's second album and trying to discern Michelle versus Jill on any tracks. There are other songs--such as the group's recording of "Dream a Little Dream of Me" where other than his spoken word intro, it's questionable whether you can hear John...

thanks for your insight and info, Richard. Over time I have also come to realize how underestimated Michelle was (at the time) as a vocalist. I (think) one can hear so much of her versatility with the PLU sessions.

Hi pauliewood,
I agree with you, concerning Michelle being underestimated as a vocalist. Songwriter Moon Martin has said her contributions to the group were underated. (As you proboably know, Michelle recorded three of his songs on 1977's Victim of Romance.) Yes, you can really hear her on PLU.
Take care,

Fantastic Four is credited as a "Mamas and the Papas" recording, but does anyone have info who the other voices are besides John Phillips? Sounds like the "NEW" Mamas and Papas to me, but really can't make out supporting vocals.

Hi Pauliewood,
As far as I can tell, Fantastic Four has vocals from the Mamas and Papas. I think that track was recorded in 1968 or 1969, I'm not sure. I can hear John, Michelle, and Denny really clearly, I think Cass is in there somwhere, but I can't tell for sure. I think I read in the liner notes to one of the John Phillips releases that Terry Melcher was in there also. Hope this helps.
Take care,
Nicole

Thanks, Nicole! I have been pretty obsessed with listening to PLU these past few weeks. John Phillips was really quite an amazing producer. He could mix the female vocals to really astound and downright confuse! Even when I listen to the "NEW" mamas and papas with Spanky and Mac, on cuts like "Frankie", I swear I'm listening to Cass and Michelle.
