Gettin' Kinda Itchie--the new book!

Gettin’ Kinda Itchie – The Groups That Made The Mamas & The Papas is an untold prequel that tells the fascinating stories of the pre- folk groups of The Mamas & The Papas from 1958-1965, before they hit it big.

The book is based on 4 decades of interviews, collecting and research with over 400 photographs and illustrations, 600 endnotes and comprehensive Sessionographies, Discographies and Concertographies for each group. We’ve been blown away at the response to the book. Academy and Tony Award winner Marshall Brickman, who was in The Tarriers and The New Journeymen, wrote last weekend, “This book is like a visit to the folk-rock section of the Louvre (if they don’t have one, they should!).”

Before soundtracking the Summer of Love as The Mamas & The Papas, musicians John Phillips, Michelle Phillips, Cass Elliot, and Denny Doherty honed their talents in groups like The Smoothies, The Journeymen, The Colonials, The Halifax Three, The Triumvirate, The Big 3, The Mugwumps and The New Journeymen. Gettin' Kinda Itchie, traces the circuitous lives of these groups and individuals—featuring secret marriages, hilarious hijinks, and FBI investigations—as they each contributed to the sound, style, and persona that set the foundation of American folk rock. Crisscrossing with folks like Gordon Lightfoot, David Crosby and Marshall Brickman it’s an amazing spirograph of intersecting artists in the Folk Revival.

Here are some testimonials.
