Candle In The Wind

One of Elton John's best known songs is "Candle In The Wind" and it is his tribute song to Marilyn Monroe. Well, I have the CD at home and the few times that I have played the song on my CD player, I have caught myself singing the song, but I have done is change the lyrics a bit. Instead of saying Norman Jean and Marilyn Monroe, I have said, Ellen Naomi (Cass Elliot's birth name) and Cass Elliot. If I had written that song as a tribute to Cass, it would go something like this:

Goodbye Ellen Naomi
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you to the treadmill
And you went to change your name

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would have like to known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burn out long before
Your legend never did

Loneliness was tough
The toughest role you ever played
The music world created a superstar
And pain was the price you paid
Even when you died
Oh the press was hounding you
And the papers had to say
That Cass died a certain way

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to know you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend never did

Goodbye Ellen Naomi
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled

Goodbye Ellen Naomi
From the young man who was about to have a fit
Who sees you something more than sexual
More than just our Cass Elliot

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend never did

And I would've liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend never did

Hi brownj,
Interesting rewrite of a classic Elton John song. Cass's legend will never burn out.
Take care,
Nicole
