Didn't Want To Have To Do It - 1964/65

This was one of the great Cass 'releases' last year. I don't know if it is still only available online or if CD's have been pressed? Has anyone gotten an Iris Music CD of "In Case You Missed This One" (which is what these two songs were on?) :?:

Richard,

The Iris Website lists this as a 2006 release and that it is out-of-stock. Here's the scoop:

Iris has an ebay seller account and has some for sale there. I've ordered one now. There is also a Vol. 2 with a Scott McKenzie recording.

Here's A Song Vol.1 arrived just as I was heading out for a week in Seattle but I took it with me. The sound quality is great and the two complete takes of Didn't Want To Have To Do It from 1964 are different enough to both be worth having, one has a John Sebastian guitar solo. Cass does a great job with the song. There's also a track by Clyde McPhatter but for me the rest is not of great interest (it seems like the 1968 Chevy Chase track is meant to be the big selling point).

THE REAL STORY: ( in brief)

The two versions of Cass Elliot singing "Didn't Want to Have to Do It" is an important historical story itself. In 1964 Alan Lorber developed a group called the Mugwumps, which consisted of Cass, Denny Doherty, Cass's first husband Jim Hendricks and Zal Yanovsky, and recorded them for Warner Bros Records. The recording is historical because before they became Mamas & Papas and The Lovin' Spoonful, they were the Mugwumps. The album was not released until 1967 after both successive groups hit. After cutting the album the Mugwumps broke up (it's all told in "Creeque Alley"). Lorber then developed the Lovin' Spoonful. During the "Do You Believe in Magic" session, John Sebastian asked if Cass who was leaving for L.A. could cut a recording of a new song he had written. The result is here in two versions, one with harmony, and the other without, both with Sebastian on guitar with guitar solos by him him and Zal Yanofsky.

Is that what you have?

Roy Silver and Bob Cavallo managed The Mugwumps at The Shadows in Georgetown. The Mugwumps had rather a dualistic existence. From July-November of 1964 they were fairly regularly playing at The Shadows but they were also trekking up, in between times, to New York and doing their thing with Alan Lorber.
