Possible Future Releases in the Papa John Presents Series?

Postby Dark Horse 77 » Sun Jun 28, 2009 3:57 pm

Checking on Varese's site they have an unreleased 1982 album by the New Mamas & Papas, so that's one.
Beyond that, does anyone know what else might be coming out?
I remember reading that John completed albums in 1992 and 1995, but I'm not sure if it was with the New Mamas or solo.

I'm not sure about '95, but Dick Weissman gave me some info on the 1992 sessions. Here's what he said...

"There's a lost album that John did at his house in Palm Springs, not long
after his liver transplant. He flew me in from Denver, Scott sang and
played, John played and sang, John Kito played keyboards, and Kenny Brescia
played guitar. There was also a percussionist named Robin, and a local bass
player who was way out of his head. Some really amazing stuff, BUT. The
producer was a local guy who hauled all his equipment into John's living
room. There was n real separation, and the tapes were hash. Also John was
in his deal-making frame of mind. The "producer" did it all on speculation,
and wouldn't surrender the tapes. I think he still has them. Really a
shame. Kenny and I played very well together-I hadn't met him before.
There was a plan for me to do a tour playing for John with a small combo,
but it never happened. I did do about half a dozen dates with that version
of The Mamas and Papas."

Very interesting stuff. Are there any other album sessions between 1982 and 1992 that you know of?

Can't remember, will have to look through my research.

One great candidate for the series would be an Abstracts/Smoothies disc, including the 2 released Smoothies singles, plus:

*2 song Abstracts demo - John and Scott's earliest known recordings. Regardless of quality, this would be amazing!

*Unreleased Smoothies tracks - Recorded at Decca's "Temple" studio Spring-Summer, 1960. Several songs were recorded for a planned album which was never released. Only four of the songs were released, on two singles, "Softly" b/w "Joanie" and "Ride, Ride, Ride" b/w "Lonely Boy and Pretty Girl". Others that were recorded include "Michael Row the Boat Ashore" and "Bile Them Cabbage Down".

Richard might be able to help on the names of the two Abstracts songs and on what other songs were recorded in the Smoothies sessions.

The session I wrote about above may have actually been the 1995 session and not '92... waiting to hear back from Kenny Brescia.

What about Jamme? I don't know much about this one at all, just that John produced it for Dunhill in 1970 during his flurry of post-Mamas activity.

How about the Phillips stuff from the unreleased soundtrack to "The Man Who Fell To Earth." As collectors note in the blogs there was never a release of a soundtrack. It is unclear to me if the movie's Phillips tracks have been released in the exact version from the film. Also, was there anything else left out of the movie?

Has anyone heard anything about what the next release will be? I remember reading the next one would be an unreleased 1982 Mamas & Papas album. Hopefully all the bad press won't mess with the release schedule.

Has anyone gotten news on anything new being released? It seems like forever since I've heard anything and had any updates from any websites.
